These guys and gals does everything from top roping to mountaineering and now they are moving on to lead climbing, which is a big move in the climbing career. The idea of incorperating climbing movement on a vertical face with clipping bolts, lead falling, fall factors and toping out on fixed anchors is just pure fun and they experience it all.

Onsight Climbing Gym rang me up to conduct sports climbing level 2 training for the Team Singapore Everest 2015 during the week and there wasn’t a better opportunity to meet these guys. Its great fun trying to impart as much knowledge and skills to the team as possible and trying to relate lead climbing skills to mountaineering. As most people would have known I did a fair bit of mountaineering training with the US Marine Corps in 2010 in Serria Mountains Nevada. It was a summer mountain leader course with a 8 days TMC in Mount Shasta where we have fun jumping into creevases and scaling ice, snow and rock walls at the same time.

The 2 days/ 14 hours training with Team Singapore Everest 2015 was intense and action packed with each person climbing up to 6 routes a day and clocking in loads of lead time on the wall. In the sports climbing level 2, I will also include abseiling since it is an important skill to have when lead climbing outdoors.

The Team had great fun for the 2 days and I hope to see them for trad climbing in Hong Kong or else where some time soon! Good luck for training and all the best for your goals on Everest!
